  1. In a small pot bring the water, milk, and salt to a low boil.
  2. Slowly add grits into boiling mixture. Stir continuously until grits are well mixed in.
  3. Bring the mixture back to a boil and cover pot with a lid, reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Add more water if necessary.
  4. Grits are done when they have the consistency of stiff cream of wheat.
  5. Add butter and serve.
